He made significant contributions to the study of birds, particularly in the southern oceans, through his work during the British, Australian, and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) and subsequent field studies, with his publications remaining influential. Falla was deeply involved in Antarctic research and conservation efforts, chairing the Nature Conservation Council and advocating for New Zealand's scientific initiatives in the Ross Sea. His work as a museum director advanced practices in scientific fieldwork, public education, and museum displays, fostering greater public interest in natural history. He also explored marine life, seals, whales, and shipping history, showcasing his wide-ranging expertise.
