  • Son of Jessie Elizabeth Smith and William Dean.

Spencer George Smith (1915–1954) was born in Reefton on the West Coast of the South Island, the son of Jessie Elizabeth and William Dean Smith. Trained as a marine engineer, he entered the Merchant Navy during World War II, contributing technical expertise to a service that operated largely beyond public attention.

During the war, Smith served at sea as an engineer, working in engine rooms under demanding and hazardous conditions. Merchant Navy personnel faced prolonged voyages, exposure to extreme heat and fumes, and the constant risk of enemy action. Smith’s service is reflected in the medals awarded to him, including the 1939–45 Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, War Medal, and New Zealand War Service Medal.

After the war, Smith returned to civilian life and family. In later years he suffered from chronic asthma, and his death in Wellington on 4 May 1954, aged 39 years 10 months, was attributed to the effects of his wartime service. His wife was granted a war widow’s pension, formally acknowledging the long -term impact of his service.

In later life, Smith’s son Bryn, who was just a child when his father died, undertook research to better understand the service that shaped his family’s history. Bryn has generously contributed information and material to Online Cenotaph, helping ensure that his father’s Merchant Navy service is formally recorded and accessible to future generations. AWMM
