The 1918-1920 Influenza Pandemic, sweeping across the globe during the final year of World War I, profoundly impacted New Zealand, quickly claiming around 9,000 lives. This devastating event is particularly notable for its severe toll among young adults, including many servicemen and women returning from the war.

In recent years, a significant project has been undertaken to catalogue the pandemic's impact on New Zealand’s military personnel. Marion Dickinson, a dedicated volunteer at Online Cenotaph, has played a pivotal role in this endeavour. Collaborating on a project initiated by Ancestry and local historian Geoffrey Rice, Marion has worked meticulously to transcribe and research the casualties of the pandemic among the New Zealand military community.

Although the initial list identified approximately 5,000 casualties, Marion has been able to pinpoint 581 individuals who were actively serving or had previously served when they succumbed to the influenza. This research has extended Online Cenotaph’s records to include more than 700 service personnel affected by the pandemic. This list will likely increase as we identify more personnel impacted by this global pandmemic.
