Lines and dots ornament the middle band

of this skirt from Vietnam. The maker has

applied dye-resistant wax to the parts they

wanted to stay white before dipping the skirt

in indigo. Once dyed, the pleats were set in

      place with many small stitches.

Fibre analysis confirmed material as a bast fibre - see Analysis Summary in conservation treatment report Cons 15529. Due to the skirt's origins in Vietnam, the fibre is likely to be hemp rather than linen.

(JG: confirmed by visiting researcher to be hemp, not ramie)
