  • Chief surgeon at the Stalag VIII B hospital. Worked with Dr John Borrie during captivity.

    Captain A. N. Slater (Stalag VIII B)

    Letter 1: 3/1/42
We average about 60 operations a month here. A large number of NZers are going through our hands and I feel it is a real privilege to have a change of helping them.

    Letter 2: 9/2/1942
Still no sign of parcel but it takes ages; as far as I know no NZ parcels have arrived yet. Fortunately we have all the essentials of life here, a change of clothing, a warm bed and sufficient food, although it becomes incredibly monotonous. The days are lengthening and the cold is not so intense. We get news from German papers and now get an occasional French paper in the Mess. The health generally of PoWs is excellent.
