Te Waikohari Tamarapa born 1892 in Maketu to Matehaukore te Ahumua and Ngahina Ngaoko. Te Waikohari was the younger brother of Te Ratahi Tamarapa (who we know by her common name Hinetaonga or Kui). After he was born, Te Waikohari was brought to Taranaki by his father and 'fostered' by Hineao for one year before returning to Maketu. Along with Te Ratahi (Kui) and his other siblings, Te Waikohari was educated at the Rotoiti school and later worked on his parents dairy farm at Ohangai. Private Te Waikohari 16/418 volunteered for enlistment in the NZ Expeditionary Force at Patea on 13 October 1914 and embarked for overseas service on 14 February 1915 with the First Maori Contingent. He served briefly in Egypt before leaving with the Contingent for Malta and landed on Gallipoli on 3 June 1915. Te Waikohari played his full part in the fighting which followed and in August was medically evacuated to Mudros, Greece where he eventually died of enteritis on 2 October 1915. Te Waikohari is buried in the Portianos Military Cemetary, Mudros (on the Greek Island of Lemnos). Te Waikohari was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 16 February 2025 - https://www.nzwargraves.org.nz/casualties/waikohari-tamarapa
