    • Private Kawenata Te Keepa. The death of Private Kawenata Te Keepa Taiporutu (Kawe) occurred at Okauia on Monday, after a somewhat long illness from disease contracted in the trenches in France. The deceased soldier, who was only twenty-one years of age, enlisted in a Maori contingent in. 1916 and saw service in France. He landed back in New Zealand about three weeks ago, and was transferred direct to the Auckland hospital. In that institution it was recognised that nothing could be done for the soldier, and he was removed to his parents' home at Okauia on January 12th. He was conscious throughout his illness, and was quite chatty " to his parents a few minutes before his peaceful death occurred. A brother of the deceased is still on active service. The funeral took place at Okauia yesterday Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 15 September 2024 - Matamata Record, Volume II, Issue 67, 31 January 1918, Page 2
