  • The death took place at Ohinemutu this week of Eketu Ngahuruhuru, aged 53 years, one of the few remaining chiefs of Ngati Whakaue. The late chief had lived at Ohinemutu throughout his life with the exception of a numbers of years during which he served in France with the Maori Contingent in the Great War. He was an enthusiastic Rugby player & supporter & immediately prior to his death was one of probably two remaining founders of the present Waikite Club in Rotorua, for which team he played many fine games as half-back. During his younger days he also played in many Dominion Maori teams, while of later years he was an ardent supporter of Te Arawa Tribal team & also the Ohinemutu Swimming Club.
