The Royal Society Te Apārangi, originally established as the New Zealand Institute in 1867, has played a pivotal role in fostering scientific research and intellectual inquiry in Aotearoa, New Zealand. It supports and promotes knowledge across a broad range of disciplines, including the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Over the years, the Society has facilitated collaboration among scholars, contributed to public policy, and provided essential funding for research.
More than 120 members served in the military during World War I and World War II, coming from a range of backgrounds, including doctors, lawyers, scientists and curators. Our own Auckland Museum staff, including Directors Sir Gilbert Archey and Graham Turbott as well as Education Officer, Richard A. Scobie, were military veterans and members of the Royal Society. Their military service reflects the diverse expertise found within the Society, spanning leadership, medicine, science, and logistics. Their efforts highlight the intersection of knowledge and service during wartime.
