Explore the fascinating world of uncovering history.

Join us in the Orientation Space in the South Atrium to meet our archaeologists and try hands-on activities such as bone- and shell-sorting, reconstructing pottery, and much more!

11AM AND 1PM
ANCIENT WORLDS GALLERY, LEVEL 1

Up in Ancient Worlds, look closely at our ancient Greek vases to see how a story was captured in a single drawing. Then create, and take home, your own cardboard vase inspired by those around you. They say a picture paints a thousand words - what story will you tell?

Then meet our resident archaeologist, Dr Josh Emmitt, for a family friendly tour. Josh will take you and your whānau on an exciting journey through the past. You'll discover cool objects from cultures in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas and learn more about these amazing civilizations.

New Zealand Archaeology Week is held annually to raise awareness and highlight the importance of protecting our archaeological heritage.

Collecting Egypt

The Mummy in our Te Onamata Ancient Worlds gallery has come a long way from her home in Ancient Egypt, and on her journey she lost something really important - her name. In this episode of The Amp we hear the incredible tale of the work done to reunite the mummy with her identity. We also explore the ways we've acquired taonga from ancient Egypt, and what comes next as our role as kaitiaki evolves.
