Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland Museum is a must-see place to experience our rich culture. Our Museum tells the story of New Zealand, its place in the Pacific and its people. 

Auckland Museum is housed in an historical building within a tranquil park which has beautiful views of the harbour. It is a place to discover and learn about New Zealand's history and stories.    

Since 1929, the Museum has also served as place of remembrance for the many Aucklanders who have sacrificed their lives in war. 

Whether you have an hour spare or a whole day, visit Auckland Museum to gain a deep understanding of New Zealand culture and heritage.

General Admission

All visitors require General Admission tickets to explore our three floors of galleries. 

Please note that some galleries are currently closed, including our Māori Court and Pacific galleries. However, there are plenty of Māori collection items to see and stories of the people of Aotearoa New Zealand to uncover in our other galleries.

Taonga is the Māori word meaning treasure, or something prized. Māori culture is therefore a living taonga of Aotearoa New Zealand.  

In this immersive experience, be introduced to Māori culture by a group of esteemed indigenous artists and orators. Our Māori Cultural Experience will take you on a journey. You will hear beautiful songs, see incredible poi skills in action, and learn about the endurance of Māori people throughout history. 

Discover the origins, traditional uses, and differences of the well-known and powerful ritual – the haka.

With so much to see and discover in Auckland Museum’s galleries, where do you start?  

Our Gallery Highlights Tour is the perfect introduction to the Museum and its wonderful collections, giving you a window into New Zealand’s past and present. 

Over the course of an hour, you’ll be guided through our renowned galleries, giving you an understanding of Māori culture and the achievements of Polynesian navigators. Explore the unique natural history and geology of Auckland and Aotearoa New Zealand and look back on the conflicts that have shaped the nation.  

The tour covers select galleries across all three floors of the Museum, and our guide will be happy to answer questions about collection items or galleries along the way. Let us show you around our place. 

Note: This tour requires visitors to walk up a flight of stairs, therefore is not suitable for visitors with additional mobility considerations.

Your Mandarin-speaking guide will be happy to answer questions about collection items or galleries along the way. Let us welcome you to our Museum and show you the heart of New Zealand culture.

"Amazing museum! So many exhibits, all incredibly well displayed and with excellent accompanying detail. You could spend weeks here and not see everything. I learned so much in my few hours here. I love how the different cultures and stories are represented. I went solo, but there were so many things for children and families to do - I highly recommend staying here. There is ample parking both under the museum and outside, and as a resident of Auckland I had free admission. There were two coffee shops and a beautiful shop. Lots to explore!"

Getting Here

 

Auckland Museum is situated in the picturesque Auckland Domain, a large park in central Auckland. 

The Museum can be easily reached from any part of the city, by car or public transport. It is a 30-minute walk or a 10-minute drive from the city centre. 

BUS
- The LINK Bus stops on nearby Parnell Road.
- Bus route 781 goes from Mission Bay to Newmarket and Auckland Museum via Orakei, every 30 minutes during peak hours. 

TRAIN
Auckland Museum is a 10-minute walk from Parnell station (Western and Southern lines), a 16-minute walk from Grafton Station (Western line), and an 18-minute walk from Newmarket Station (Western and Southern lines).

DRIVING AND PARKING
If you are driving, secure undercover paid parking is available. Enter from Maunsell Road, which is on the Newmarket side of the Domain. Our car park uses license plate recognition. When you enter the car park, the barrier arm will automatically raise for you.  Your payment amount will automatically be calculated based on when you enter the car park.
