BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL

Helmed by award-winning comedian, seasoned quizmaster and highly competent speller Rhys Mathewson (7 Days, Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont-Spelling Bee) you’ll be in safe hands when the night takes a slightly spooky turn...

Our quiz will feature all the usual suspects – arts, pop culture, sport, science, nature, plus a few bloodsuckers-related ones too. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know your leeches from your lampreys, but if you want to swot up, the Bloodsuckers: Legends to Leeches exhibition is open an hour before the quiz starts, with helpful characters to give you a nudge in the right direction.

As well as the main event there’ll be team and individual challenges under the watchful eye of our master vampire hunter and associates, who’ll also protect you from any stray bloodsuckers – especially after sunset.

So join us for a night of quizzing, comedy and theatrical hijinks. Reserve your tickets today and prepare to dive into the shadowy, shuddery, and a bit silly, world of bloodsuckers.

Rest assured, our quiz night won’t suck and you will have a bloody good time.

There'll be a bar available to purchase drinks to lubricate your memory cogs, and food options to fuel your grey matter. You can even leave your brain free to focus entirely on the quiz by pre-ordering bottles of wine and platters online when you purchase tickets.

If you want to keep it exclusive, book a table of four, six, or eight (you can add extras later if needed, up to a maximum of eight people).

Otherwise, join a 'Stranger Things' table of future friends.

Entry to Bloodsuckers: Legends to Leeches is included in the ticket price (value of $22). The exhibition will be open from 6.30PM until the event finishes.

 Meet your Quizmaster

Rhys Mathewson

Rhys has been a professional stand up comedian for 18 years and a regular on NZ comedy panel shows like 7 Days and Have You Been Paying Attention? and Dancing With the Stars, where he was eliminated in 5th place because he contracted the novel coronavirus. He still reckons he would’ve won it.

In 2020 Rhys supported Jack Whitehall on his only New Zealand show at Spark Arena, playing for over 6,000 people and in 2022 hosted of the biggest event of the NZ comedy calendar, the televised opening night gala of the New Zealand International Comedy Festival.

Frequently asked questions

+What is this?

It’s like a pub quiz but inside a museum! We are hosting an entertaining evening of quizzing, comedy and perhaps a theatrical spook or two, alongside our international Bloodsuckers: Legends to Leeches exhibition.

+What can I win?

There will be spot prizes for individual and team challenges, as well as First and Second Place hampers worth $250 and $150 (respectively).

+How much does it cost?

Our tickets are $39 per adult, $140 for a team of four, $210 for a team of six, or $280 for a team of eight. Museum members receive a 10% discount off individual tickets, which will be applied at checkout.

Your ticket price includes entry into our special international exhibition, Bloodsuckers: Legends to Leeches on the night.

+Do I have to enter as a team, or can I join one on the night?

You can enter as a fully formed team – choose a table size of 4, 6 or 8 (more on adding extras below). Or if you want to come along by yourself or with just one or two friends, we can buddy you up with another small group to create a STRANGER THINGS super-team. Perhaps they’ll be able to plug your knowledge gap!

+Can I add extra teammates to my table?

Yes, you (or your teammate themselves) can book one or more individual tickets to add seats to your table to a maximum of eight people. Make sure you enter the draft team name that you chose when you made your initial team booking, and get any extras booked in by Sunday 9 February.

+Will table seating be allocated?

Yes, we will organise a seating plan and this will be prominently displayed on your arrival, just like a wedding. The seating plan will display your draft team name, or if you are part of a STRANGER THINGS table, the name you booked under.

(Don’t worry, you can still change your team name on the night!).

+What time should we arrive?

The doors open at 6.30PM. We recommend arriving early to give you the best chance to view the Bloodsuckers: Legends to Leeches exhibition and grab some food and drink from Tuitui Bistro, before the quiz begins. You will need to be seated by 7.30PM, so it’s best to give yourself plenty of time to find your table and get yourself settled in.

+How do we get into the Museum?

Please enter Auckland Museum via the South Atrium entrance into Te Ao Mārama.

+Will the car park be open?

Yes, there is limited parking in the Museum’s underground carpark. This will be open for the evening at a special discounted rate of $11.50. Closure of the carpark will coincide with the end of the event.

As usual there will be free parking up to 180 minutes around the Museum and the Domain.

See here for full details on public transport options and parking details.

+Which parts of the Museum will be open during this event?

Te Ao Mārama South Atrium, the Bloodsuckers: Legends to Leeches exhibition and Tuitui Bistro will be the only parts of the Museum that will be open.

+Food & Beverages

Tuitui Bistro will be open from 6.30PM, with last orders for food and drinks at 9.45PM.

A selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and hot food will be available for purchase.

During the booking process you can pre-order bottles of wine or beer along with your tickets. These will be delivered to your table on arrival.

While you can drink and eat to your heart’s content in Tuitui Bistro and Te Ao Mārama South Atrium, please don’t take food or drink into the Bloodsuckers: Legends to Leeches exhibition.

Click here to view the special menu for the quiz night.

+Is there a coat / bag check available?

We have electronic self-service lockers in Te Ao Mārama South Atrium, in which you can store your bags and coats, payable by electronic transaction only.

+Can I bring my friend if they haven't booked?

This event has sold out so there will be no door sales.

+Is the entire event accessible for those using wheelchairs/pushchairs?

Yes, the evening’s activities are all on the ground floor of the Museum. The Museum itself can be accessed via lifts or ramps. Please let us know if you have any team members who use a wheelchair or cannot be seated at a high bar table so that we can ensure you are allocated an appropriate table.

+Photography at the event

Please note that there may be photography for publicity and promotion purposes at this event. Please inform the photographer if you do not want your photo taken.
