Round up your mates for a night of big laughs, fierce competition and seriously satisfying trivia. From pop culture and history to sport, science and more, expect questions spanning the full quiz spectrum.

In honour of our blockbuster Sharks exhibition, we’re throwing in one special shark-themed round — but don’t worry, this is not an all-sharks affair. You won’t need to know your hammerheads from your hexanchiformes to hold your own. (Though your ticket does include entry to Sharks before the quiz, if you fancy a tactical pre-game.)

Hosted by comedian, presenter and all-round “knower-of-things" Robbie Nicol (The Spinoff, White Man Behind a Desk), expect a night packed with trivia, audience games, curveballs and a highly considered dose of shark puns.

Whether you've got a full team of 8, or want to come along with a couple of friends, there's something for everyone at The Great Museum Quiz. See our FAQs for more ticketing information.

Tickets for this event has sold out.

 Meet your Quizmaster

Robbie Nicol

Robbie Nicol is an award-winning comedian, actor, and writer based in Auckland. Most recently found on hand-sized screens as the host of The Spinoff's highly popular explainer video series, 'Now You Know,' Robbie Nicol is well situated to adjudicate as Quizmaster for this year’s Great Museum Quiz.

Making his name as the creator and host of 'White Man Behind A Desk', Robbie Nicol’s satirical web series (and theatrical spinoffs) earned him the title of "Kiwi John Oliver" from the Sunday Star Times and "satire genius" from Dame Jacinda Ardern. Nicol’s recent co-creator credits also include Three and RNZ’s comedy civics webseries 'The Citizen's Handbook'.

Nicol has appeared on a slew of television web series, including ‘The Educators’, ‘My Favourite Dead Person’ and ‘Homebound 3.0’. He has written for the much-loved Taskmaster series, and hosted panels and events including moderating last year’s ‘The Great Comedy Debate’ for NZ International Comedy Festival.

+What is this?

It’s like a pub quiz but inside a Museum! We are hosting an entertaining evening of quizzing, comedy, and friendly competition, all set alongside our highly popular Sharks exhibition.

+What can I win?

Plenty! There are spot prizes throughout the night, plus awards for 1st and 2nd Place teams.

+How much does it cost?

A table of eight is $336, and individual tickets are $42 per adult. Museum members receive a 10% discount off all tickets, which will be applied at checkout.

Your ticket price includes entry into our special international exhibition, Sharks on the night.

+Do I have to enter as a team, or can I join one on the night?

You can enter as a fully formed team – choose a table size of six or eight. Or if you want to pop along by yourself or with a few friends, we can buddy you up with another small group to create a STRANGER THINGS super-team. Perhaps they’ll be able to plug your knowledge gap!

+Will table seating be allocated?

Yes, we will organise a seating plan and this will be prominently displayed on your arrival, just like a wedding. The seating plan will display your team’s name, or if you are part of a STRANGER THINGS table, the name you booked under.

+What time should we arrive?

The doors open at 6.30pm. We recommend arriving early to give you the best chance to view Sharks, our special exhibition and grab some food and drink from Tuitui Bistro, before the quiz begins. You will need to be seated by 7.30pm, so it’s best to give yourself plenty of time to find your table and get yourself settled in.

+How do we get into the Museum?

Please enter Auckland Museum via the South Atrium entrance into Te Ao Mārama.

+Will the car park be open?

Yes, there is limited parking in the Museum’s underground carpark. This will be open for the evening at a special discounted rate of $11.50. Closure of the carpark will coincide with the end of the event.

As usual there will be free parking up to 180 minutes around the Museum and the Domain.

See here for full details on public transport options and parking details.

+Which parts of the Museum will be open during this event?

Te Ao Mārama South Atrium, the Sharks exhibition and Tuitui Bistro will be the only parts of the Museum that will be open.

+ Food & Beverages

Tuitui Bistro will be open from 6.30pm, with last orders for food and drinks at 9.45pm.

A selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and hot food will be available for purchase. Please click here for full menu options.

While you can drink and eat to your heart’s content in Tuitui Bistro and Te Ao Mārama South Atrium, please don’t take food or drink into the Sharks exhibition.

+Is there a coat / bag check available?

We have electronic self-service lockers in Te Ao Mārama South Atrium, in which you can store your bags and coats, payable by electronic transaction only.

+Is the entire event accessible for wheelchair users?

Yes, the evening’s activities are all accessible for wheelchair users, and the Museum itself can be accessed via lifts or ramps.

If you are a wheelchair user please inform us when you book your ticket to ensure we don’t seat you at one of the high top tables with bar stools.

+Photography at the event

Please note that there may be photography for publicity and promotion purposes at this event. Please inform the photographer if you do not want your photo taken.
