Annual Report 2024-2025

This year marked our first full year delivering on The Path to 2029, as we continued to evolve into a social-impact museum grounded in the needs and aspirations of Tāmaki Makaurau.

The discovery of asbestos in our heritage building presented unexpected challenges as we prepared for our centenary. While we temporarily closed parts of the Museum to prioritise the safety of our people, visitors and taonga, we remained steadfast in our mission, adapting quickly to ensure we could continue to welcome audiences and deliver meaningful programming, exhibitions and research.

We deepened community connection and mātauranga through the completion of Tui Tui Tuia: Revitalising Te Toki a Tapiri a project that combined conservation science with mātauranga Māori to protect, conserve, and uplift the mana of Te Toki a Tapiri, the large waka taua. We welcomed audiences to a vibrant programme including Bloodsuckers: Legends to Leeches, Mana: Protest in Print, and DIVA, and expanded our digital reach with the launch of The Amp podcast, amplifying our stories to new audiences.

Thanks to the resilience and dedication of our teams, we continued to deliver exceptional experiences, strengthen community partnerships, and uphold our role as kaitiaki through a period of uncertainty, demonstrating the depth of commitment that underpins our impact.
