We're pleased to welcome back this young and lively group of performers called Marewen, Te Rabakau Kiribati Unit from Finlayson Park School in Manurewa, the only Kiribati unit in New Zealand.

For Kiribati Language Week, we're celebrating with the Kiribati community through a live performance, showcasing culture in action. The theme for this year is: 'Living our valued cultural practices through love and respect, upholding our dignity and growth for a successful future'.

The Marewen Te Rabakau Kiribati Unit is led by the inspirational Erika Taeang, a dedicated teacher who has been teaching at Finlayson Park School for more than 28 years and a cultural knowledge holder for the Kiribati community. She is passionate about teaching the younger I-Kiribati generation to speak their mother tongue fluently, hold on to their heritage and be proud of their culture.

Erika has a close relationship with the Museum and started with this fantastic young group of primary school children that now doubled to nearly 33 students today. Wonderful growth for the small but very close community of Kiribati here in Auckland.

This cultural performance will include dances and songs to the beat of the distinct sounds of Kiribati.
